Aftermath of Hurricane Helene
According to the North Carolina Poultry Association (NCPA) the broiler industry in the severely impacted western counties emerged with limited structural damage or flooding of houses and facilities. Disruption was intense with widespread failure of grid power and in some cases the availability of municipal water. Almost all farms and hatcheries are operating on emergency generators while repairs are in progress, with 500,000 customers without electric service. Roads and bridges have been damaged and 1,600 NCDOT workers are effecting temporary repairs. Many plant shifts were cancelled but according to Bob Ford of the NCPA, production should be restored by mid-week.
