According to the new Inspection Guidance for Animal Slaughtering and Processing Establishments, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will expand activities in accordance with NAICS3116 (Animal Slaughtering and Processing). The action was taken based on data indicating that processing of meat and poultry has a statistically significantly higher level of injuries and illnesses compared to industry in general. Hazards recognized by OSHA include: -
- Defective ergonomics leading to musculoskeletal injury.
- The misuse or failure to supply or wear personal protective equipment.
- Non-compliance with lockout-tag-out procedures.
- Slips and falls.
- Defective guarding of machinery to prevent accidental contact.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals including ammonia, chlorine, peracetic acid, carbon dioxide and nitrogen in gas and liquid form.
- Occupational noise.
- Inaccessible exits.

Action by OSHA during 2025 will be strongly influenced by the future Administration as evidenced by events during the COVID period compared to intensified inspection and citations over the past three years.
